The Tamil Nadu Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution strongly opposing the construction of the Mekedatu dam proposed by the Karnataka government on the Cauvery river. In this resolution, introduced by Chief Minister Joseph C. Vijay, it was said that the verdicts already given by the Tribunal and the Supreme Court on the distribution of Cauvery waters should be respected. It demanded that the Central government should not give any permission for new projects without the permission of the states concerned. The government argued that the Cauvery is already a water-scarce river basin and that construction of new reservoirs would cause damage to Tamil Nadu. It also asked the Center not to grant environmental clearances for the project.
