  • Shortage of protective equipment for sanitation workers!

The neglect of the authorities towards the sanitation workers in Kotapoluru Panchayat of Sullurpet Mandal, Tirupati District has reached its peak. Aren’t we human beings in society? Don’t we have a responsibility to show at least some humanity and compassion towards our fellow human beings? Looking at the pitiful condition of the sanitation workers working in Kotapoluru Panchayat of Sullurpet Mandal, Tirupati District, it is clear that the neglect of the local authorities has reached its peak. The workers and the people are expressing deep anger over the non-provision of minimum protective equipment. It is very sad that the panchayat machinery is in such a dire situation that it cannot even provide gloves for the hands, gum shoes for the feet, and masks for the faces of the workers who risk their lives to remove the waste accumulated in the sewers every day. Despite knowing that there is a threat of epidemics, the workers are risking their lives to perform their duties due to the indifference of the authorities. “Aren’t we also human beings, don’t our lives have value?” the workers are expressing their grief. However, there has been much criticism of the attitude of these panchayat officials in the past as well. Allegations are being made that they are being negligent in many tasks and are making public problems a reality. This negligence shown by the officials in providing minimum facilities while holding a responsible position is a proof of the thoughtless attitude of the officials. The higher officials should take strict action on such matters in the “Division Level Monitoring Committee Meetings” held once every 60 days. The responsibility to provide all safety facilities to the workers lies with the officials. At least the district high officials should respond, conduct an inquiry into the conduct of the Kotapoluru Panchayat officials and take action against those responsible. People are demanding that the safety of sanitation workers should be stopped and necessary facilities should be provided to them immediately. Otherwise, they are warning that public agitations are inevitable.
