New law for detention for up to a year in West Bengal

The West Bengal Assembly has passed two controversial bills. The main one, the ‘West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill-2026’, empowers the government to detain a person considered a threat to society for a maximum period of one year before the completion of the trial. An advisory board headed by a former High Court judge will be set up to review the cases of detainees. Another bill includes a provision to collect compensation from those who destroy public or private property. While the opposition has criticized these laws as being against democratic rights, the government has clarified that they are only to strengthen the rule of law.
