The central government has taken a key decision to curb the manufacture and sale of counterfeit medicines in the country. A gazette notification has been issued making QR code or bar code mandatory on the packaging of vaccines, cancer drugs, antimicrobial drugs, and narcotic drugs. By scanning this code, details like the manufacturer of the drug, batch number, date of manufacture, and expiration date can be easily found. This will make it easier to identify counterfeit drugs and monitor the supply system. These regulations will come into effect for vaccines and cancer drugs from July 1, 2027, and for antimicrobial drugs from July 1, 2028. This decision will further strengthen the health security of the people.
