Radio-tagged endangered vulture dies of electrocution

In a major setback for the conservation of the endangered White-rumped Vulture, a radio-tagged bird has died after touching a power line in Tamil Nadu. The vulture was previously released in Maharashtra’s Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and later moved to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. Although forest officials monitored it in the hope that it would acclimatize to its new habitat, it died after touching a power line while roaming in the surrounding areas. The incident has challenged efforts to reintroduce the vultures into the wild through captive breeding programs. Wildlife conservation experts suggest that power lines need to be made bird-friendly in the future.
