A special POCSO court has sentenced a 65-year-old accused to death for raping and murdering a three-and-a-half-year-old girl in Maharashtra’s Pune district. The court, which described the case as an “extremely rare case”, rejected the plea for reduction in sentence keeping in mind the age of the accused. The trial was completed and the verdict was delivered within 60 days of the incident. The police filed a 1,200-page charge sheet in 15 days and presented statements of over 55 witnesses to the court. Officials said that the verdict, which provided speedy justice, has brought some relief to the victim’s family.
