A multi-storey warehouse under construction in the Taratala area of West Bengal’s capital Kolkata collapsed on Wednesday. Five workers were killed and several others were injured in the accident. Officials believe that many more may be trapped under the rubble. Immediately after the accident, NDRF, Indian Army and fire brigade personnel jointly launched rescue operations. Efforts are underway to remove the rubble using heavy cranes and gas cutters to rescue the workers. Police have detained three people after a preliminary investigation revealed irregularities in the construction permits. The state government has ordered a special audit of all constructions under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation limits. The Chief Minister said that compensation will be announced for the families of the deceased.
