Government ready for Uniform Civil Code Bill in West Bengal

The West Bengal government has announced that it will introduce a bill for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the assembly in August. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced this in the assembly. Before this, the state cabinet will give in-principle approval on July 2. The committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will submit its report within four weeks. The bill will be finalized after a comprehensive study of marriage, inheritance and family laws. However, the government said that the Adivasis, Scheduled Tribes and Kurmi community will be exempted from this law. The decision has led to a wide debate in the state’s politics.
