State Minister N. Anand said that the demand for a special tribunal to be set up in the case of Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu project on the Cauvery river will not harm Tamil Nadu. He said that Tamil Nadu needs to protect its rights in the wake of the efforts of the Centre and the Karnataka government to take the project forward under new guidelines. He said that disputes over excess water usage and water distribution can be resolved through the tribunal. Alleging that permission was not given for a discussion on the same issue in the Assembly, AIADMK members walked out of the House.
