Konidela Nagababu, popularly known as Naga Babu, formally assumed charge as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Andhra Pradesh Society for Greening and Reforestation for Ecological Enrichment (AP Green) on 28 August 2026 at Aranya Bhavan in Mangalagiri, Andhra Pradesh.
Nagababu, who is a Member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council and a leader of the Jana Sena Party, was appointed to the position by the Andhra Pradesh government on 17 August 2026. The appointment carries Cabinet-rank status.
Under the AP Green initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government has set a target of increasing the combined forest and tree cover to 50% of the state’s geographical area by 2047. The state’s reported forest cover currently stands at about 22.96%.
Nagababu said the programme would focus not only on forests but also on increasing greenery in agricultural lands, villages, urban areas, roadsides, canal banks, institutional premises, industrial areas and suitable wastelands.
As chairman, Nagababu is expected to coordinate with various government departments and district-level agencies to accelerate AP Green programmes and monitor their implementation. The initiative also seeks participation from farmers, students, youth, voluntary organisations, industries, CSR groups and citizens.
Nagababu has emphasised that planting trees alone would not be sufficient, stressing the importance of ensuring the survival, protection and healthy growth of planted saplings through monitoring mechanisms.
Nagababu is the brother of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who also holds the Environment and Forests portfolio. The AP Green initiative operates in the environmental and forestry sphere of the state government.
