Claim that banks took 99.97% haircut on Rs 22,000 crore of Subhash Chandra-linked loans incorrect: Govt sources

Subhash Chandra loan haircut controversy The Subhash Chandra loan haircut controversy concerns a repayment plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in August 2026 in the personal insolvency proceedings involving businessman Subhash Chandra, founder of the Essel Group. Reports initially stated that creditors had accepted a repayment of approximately ₹6.5 crore against admitted claims of ₹22,006 crore, implying a reduction of about 99.97%. Indian Express +1 However, government sources disputed the characterization of the case as a 99.97% haircut on ₹22,000 crore of bank loans. According to the clarification, the ₹22,006 crore figure represents claims admitted against Chandra in his capacity as a personal guarantor for debts taken by various Essel- and Zee-linked companies, rather than money personally borrowed by him. NDTV Profit +1 Government sources said that only about ₹2,574 crore of the claims related to loans for which Chandra had provided a personal guarantee at the time of the original borrowing. Many of the other guarantees were reportedly provided later as additional security. Moneycontrol
