  డబ్బుతో వైద్యం చేసే డాక్టర్లను చూసాం, మోకాలికి తలనొప్పికి ముడిపెట్టి డబ్బు గుంజే డాక్టర్లను చూసాం. కాని డబ్బుతో కాకుండా మనసుతో వైద్యం చేసే డాక్టర్లను మనం ఎన్నడూ చూసి ఉండం . వీరు చాలా అరుదుగా ఉంటారు. ఇలాంటి మనసున్న డాక్టరే గూడూరికి చెందిన సుంకర రామచంద్రరావు అలియాస్ గంగూలీ. డబ్బుతో గాకుండా మంచి వాక్కుతో వైద్యం చేయొచ్చని నిరూపించిన ప్రజాబందువు ఈయన. అందుకే ఈయన గురించి నెల్లూరుకు చెందిన సహజకవి మల్లెమాల సుందరరామిరెడ్డి ఇలా అన్నారు.

  పై కవితలోని ప్రతి వాఖ్యం అక్షర సత్యమన్నట్టు ప్రజారంజకుడిగా పేదల పాలిటి దైవంగా, తన అమృతవాక్కులతో రోగాల్ని నయం చేసే మనసున్న మారాజు డాక్టర్ సుంకర రామచంద్ర రావు. వీరు స్వస్థలం రాజమండ్రి అయిన నెల్లూరు, వెంకటగిరి, గూడూరు ప్రభుత్వ ఆసుపత్రులలో డాక్టరుగా మంచి పేరు సంపాదించుకొని, గూడూరులో స్థిరనివాసంతో పాటు ప్రైవేటు ఆసుపత్రిని ఏర్పాటు చేసుకొన్నారు. డబ్బుకన్నా సేవ మిన్నగా తలచి వైద్యో నారాయణో హరి అనే సామెతకు సార్ధకత చేకూర్చారు. గూడూరు ప్రజలతో మమేకం అయ్యి గూడూరు డాక్టరుగా పేరు పొందారు.

                                                 
డాక్టరు రామచంద్రరావు మొదటగా మిలిటరీలో డాక్టరుగా పనిచేశారు. క్రమశిక్షణతో కూడిన వైద్యం అక్కడే ఆయన అలవర్చుకొన్నారు. మంచి క్రీడాకారుడు కావడం చేత సుంకరకు రాష్ట్ర ఫుట్ బాల్ అసోసియేషన్ ఉపాధ్యక్ష పదవి కూడా దక్కింది. ఫుట్ బాల్ గేమ్ లో అసామాన్య నైపుణ్యం వల్ల ఈయనకు గంగూలీ అన్న మారుపేరు వచ్చిందని వారి కుమార్తె లతారావు తెలిపారు. గూడూరు మునిసిపాలిటీకి ఎల్డర్మన్ గా, గూడూరు రోటరీ క్లబ్ అధ్యక్షులుగా పనిచేస్తూనే రోటరీ పేరుతో రాత్రి ఆస్పత్రిని కేవలం బీదసాదల కోసమే పెట్టి వైద్య సహాయాన్ని అందించారు. పేద ప్రజలు వైద్యం లేకుండా చనిపోవడం తనను కలచి వేస్తుందనేవారు. అందుకే ప్రజలకు మెరుగైన చికిత్సను అందించేవారు. పెద్ద పెద్ద రోగాలు సైతం ఈయన చేతి స్పర్శతో తగ్గేవని పెద్దలు ఇప్పటికి చెపుతుంటారు. మంచి హస్తవాసి కల డాక్టరుగా పేరు పొందారు. డాక్టర్ గారి దగ్గర శిష్యరికం చేసిన వారు కూడా వైద్యులుగా చెలామణి అయిన సందర్భాలు లేకపోలేదు. ఈయన శిష్యుడు క్రొవ్విడి సుబ్రహ్మణ్యం మంచి డాక్టర్ గా గూడూరులో పేరు తెచ్చుకోవడం విశేషం.

రావు గారు వైద్యవృత్తిలో తీరిక లేకున్నా ప్రజలకు ఏదో రకంగా సహాయం చేయాలనే తృష్ణతో గూడూరులో అన్ని సంస్థల్లో, సంఘాల్లో  సభ్యత్వం తీసుకొన్నారు. కార్మిక సంఘాల నుంచి కళాసాహిత్య సంస్థలదాకా అన్నింటిని ముందుండి నడిపించేవారు. నాడు గూడూరులో డాక్టర్ సీతారామయ్య, డాక్టర్ సి.ఆర్.రెడ్డి, సుంకరల మధ్య ఆరోగ్యకరమైన పోటీ ఉండేది.

స్థానికుడు కానప్పటికి సుంకర రామచంద్రరావు గారి నిరాడంబరత, నిస్వార్ధత, యధార్థవాదం, మూలంగా గూడూరు ప్రజాహృదయాల్లో చిరస్థాయిగా నిలిచారు. వీరి స్వచ్ఛమైన సేవాగుణాన్ని చూసి, ఒకప్పటి మైకా కింగ్ అయిన సిద్ధయ్య నాయుడు తన కుమార్తె అనసూయను రామచంద్రరావు తమ్ముడు హనుమంతరావు కిచ్చి పెళ్ళిచేసారు. ఇలా గూడూరు ప్రజలతో సంబంధ భాంధవ్యాలను ఏర్పరచుకొని గూడూరుపై తనకు గల అభిమానాన్ని చాటుకొన్నారు. యస్.ఆర్. అనే బ్రాండ్ నేమ్ తో పాపులర్ అయ్యారు. ఇలా అనతికాలంలోనే పేరు ప్రఖ్యాతులు సంపాదించుకొని 1970 లో హఠాత్తుగా హృద్రోగంతో మరణించారు.

సుంకర గారి అకాల మరణానికి నాడు గూడూరు పట్టణం మొత్తం తల్లడిల్లిపోయింది. ఆరోజుల్లో గూడూరు టౌన్ లో మొత్తం 20 వేలమంది జనాభా ఉంటే దాదాపు 15 వేల మంది వారి అంత్యక్రియల్లో పాల్గొన్నారని జమీన్ రైతు పత్రిక వ్యాఖ్యానించింది. పురవీధులగుండా ఆయన భౌతికకాయం ఉత్సవంగా తీసుకోయే సమయంలో వీధులన్నీ కిక్కిరిసి, పూలతో అడుగుమేరకు నిలిచి, వాటిని మున్సిపాలిటీ వారు తొలగించడానికి వారం పట్టిందట. గూడూరులోని అంగళ్ళు, సంస్థలు, మైకా కంపెనీలు, మైకా మైన్లు, రవాణా సంస్థలు అన్ని మూసివేసి చిన్నాపెద్దా అనే తేడా లేకుండా అందరూ అయన అంత్యక్రియల్లో పాల్గొనడం డాక్టర్ గారి మంచితనానికి, నిలువెత్తు నిదర్శనంగా చెప్పవచ్చు. బహుశా గూడూరులో ఈ స్థాయి పేరు ప్రఖ్యాతులు, అభిమానాలను, గౌరవాన్ని సంపాదించుకొన్న వ్యక్తి మరొకరు లేరు. చనిపోయేనాటికి ఈయన వయస్సు 54 సంవత్సరాలు. వీరి భార్య సుంకర మణియమ్మ కవయిత్రిగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందారు. రావు గారికి 5 మంది కుమారులు, 3 కుమార్తెలు. ఆయనకు నివాళులర్పిస్తూ ముదివర్తి కొండమాచార్యులు..

మనసునందు కర్ణములందు మాటలందు
వితరణమునందు సదసద్వివేక మందు
‘దోస్తు’ సుంకర రామచంద్రునకు జోడు
లేడు లేదింకా భువి కానరాదు రాడు …

ఇలా అందరి మనసులో మరువలేని లేని జ్ఞాపకంగా మిగిలి, కాలగర్భంలో కలిసిపోయారు. రామచంద్ర రావు గారి సంతాప సభలో వారి కుటుంబీకులు, గూడూరు పెద్దలు, డబ్బున్న మహారాజులు యస్.ఆర్. ఆస్పత్రిని డాక్టర్ గారి స్మృతి చిహ్నంగా చేయాలని కమిటీని కూడా వేశారు. కొందరైతే ఒక అడుగు ముందుకు వేసి ఏకంగా రావు గారి విగ్రహాన్ని ఏర్పాటు చేస్తే బాగుంటుందని సెలవిచ్చారు. ఆ తర్వాత ఎదో సామెత చెప్పినట్టు …. జాతర ముగిసింది. ఎవరి పనుల్లో వారు మునిగిపోయారు. కాల చక్రంలో అన్ని మరుగున పడిపోయాయి. తన తరువాత కూడా యస్.ఆర్. హాస్పిటల్ కొనసాగాలని ‘పేదలు వైద్యలేమితో బాధపడకూడదు అన్న సుంకర రామచంద్ర రావు గారి కల కలగానే మిగిలిపోయింది’.

Doctor’s day was celebrated recently in June. This day reminds us of some of the stalwarts who remained as noble as their profession. One such stalwart who stood strong in his times was Dr.Sunkara Ramachandra Rao alias Ganguly (1916-1970 ). It’s important to pay tribute to this staunch committed person at a time when medicine has become a commodity which can earn maximum profit at the cost of human lives. It is rare to see doctors of his stature in the present times. He treated patients with compassion, love and respect, not through money. While describing about this legendary personality, poet Mallemala Sundararamaiah from Nellore, popularly known as ‘sahaja kavi’ wrote

“ Treated the downtrodden as your own relatives, every night was day for you, every patient was a child to you, you dedicated yourself to serve the needy, you felicitated and promoted artists, droughts or floods you stood and served first, instilled strength and confidence, you conquered everyone’s hearts with humility and humanity, but you left us too early. Accept our salutes oh beautiful soul, Sunkara Ramachandra”

Every single word written in this poem about Dr Sunkara Ramachandrarao (SR) was so true; he gained respect from the downtrodden not only for the treatment but also for his empathetic conversations. Though he hails from Rajahmundry, he worked as a doctor in government hospitals in Venkatagiri, Nellore, and in Gudur. He had his own clinic which brought him much closer to the various sections of people from the town.

Dr Rao initially worked in the military. In this profession with utmost commitment and discipline. He was a good sportsman too and was the vice-president for state level football association.Their daughter Lata Rao said that he got the nickname Ganguly because of his extraordinary skill in the game of football. He was also quite active in cultural events, was president for Gudur rotary club, ‘elder man’ for Gudur municipality and became member in numerous associations/organisations, ranging from workers unions to cultural associations, without compromising his professional commitments. The thought of poor dying unable access and afford health care was unacceptable to him. Even now, people say that any disease could be treated by him as his touch was so special. His disciple Dr. K.Subrhamanyam also earned a good name in Gudur. SR had a healthy relationship with other prominent doctors like CR Reddy and Sitaramayya.

Though he was not a localite, he became a household name in the town for his frankness, boldness, generous and selfless attitude. It was merely for these qualities, Siddaiah Naidu, known as the ‘mica king’ in those days, went ahead with marriage alliances with Dr’s family. This strengthened his bonding with the town and gradually SR became a popular household name. He achieved, served and earned a very good name in a short duration and died in 1970 due to cardiac issues, bringing an end to to his great service.

His death shook the entire Gudur, people wept inconsolably. While reporting this, Zameen Rythu, wrote that, out of twenty thousand people in the town, almost fifteen thousand have attended his funeral procession and it took almost a week for the municipality to clean and clear the outcome of the procession. All the shops, ranging from mica mines, transport offices to small Kirana shops, were closed voluntarily respecting his demise, a rare phenomenon to achieve.

He died at the age of 54 leaving behind his wife a poet, 5 sons and 3 daughters. Mudivarthi Kondamacharyulu, offering his condolence to his friend expressed quite poetically and poignantly that, SR is an incomparable legend.

On the day of mourning ceremony, all the big, rich, culturally significant personalities of the town gathered along with his family members. Collectively all of them decided to convert the SR hospital into a memorabilia, even formed a committee to monitor the matter, some went further by proposing to stall his statue, however all these proposals and promises remained unfulfilled. Everyone got busy with their respective lives. SR’s dream and vision that needy should not suffer due to unavailability to health care remained a dream….
