The Kerala government has launched the ‘Priyadarshini’ free bus travel scheme to promote women’s empowerment. Women and transgender people can travel free of cost in regular buses of the state transport corporation. The facility has been implemented in about 3,125 buses in the first phase. The performance of the scheme will be reviewed for the first 100 days and then extended to other bus services. The government has said that the scheme will reduce the travel expenses of women and provide them with easy access to travel for education, jobs and other needs. Officials believe that this will contribute to the economic self-reliance of women in the society.
