HCU Student Union Election Results — An Important Political Lesson

The results of the Hyderabad Central University student union elections are not just the results of a university election. They can be seen as an important political signal indicating the direction of student politics in the country and the need for unity between democratic-secular forces.

In 2025, the ABVP-led alliance won all six key positions in the HCU student union. In 2026, the AISA-ASA-DSU-SFI-TSF alliance won the presidency and several other positions. The fact that the segregated democratic, leftist, Dalit and tribal student forces came together on a single platform seems to be an important factor in these results.
The first lesson this outcome provides is that united democratic forces can stand more effectively than divided democratic forces.

Leftist student organizations like SFI and AISA, along with Dalit and tribal student organizations like ASA, DSU, and TSF, have been able to build an alternative platform by working together.

This election has once again shown that it is possible to achieve broad unity centered on issues such as social justice, equality, educational rights, and democratic rights of students.

There is another important point here.

Student unions like PDSU and NSUI, which prioritize democratic ideology, also need to put aside their differences and think about broader democratic unity. Election reports state that this time in HCU, PDSU–MSF–NSUI–Fraternity contested as a separate alliance.

If minimal joint action is possible on the common issues of preserving democracy, secular values, social justice, and student rights, there will be an opportunity for broader democratic student unity.

This is not just a question about HCU.
In the context of religious confirmation, social division, and growing political competition in educational institutions across the country, how democratic, secular, and social justice forces will overcome their differences is becoming a key question.

The HCU experience makes one thing clear:

To build an alternative, unity must first be built among alternative forces.
If Left, Dalit, Adivasi, secular, and democratic student groups, while preserving their respective identities, can work together on common issues such as constitutional values, social justice, equality, students’ rights, and the protection of democracy, the foundation for a broader alternative political platform will be laid.

In this context, the results of the HCU student union elections provide an important lesson not only to the student unions but also to the major political parties in the country — democracy, secularism, social justice and Forces that protect constitutional values need to prioritize joint democratic action over mutual competition.
Ultimately, the direction an election takes is more important than its outcome.

The alternative to division is unity.

The alternative to religious validation is secular democracy.

The alternative to inequality is social justice.

It is not a substitute for democracy — the way is to further strengthen democracy.

The HCU student election experience stands as an important example of this debate.
