Right to walk is a fundamental right: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has given a key verdict that the right to walk safely on roads is a fundamental right of every citizen. The court clarified that there should be specially identified and properly maintained footpaths for pedestrians. It said that the safety of pedestrians should be given priority over vehicular traffic. The verdict was issued in the case of a five-year-old boy who died after being hit by a truck. It ordered a compensation of more than ₹11 lakh to the boy’s family. It advised the central government to formulate a legal system for the management of footpaths.
